Party Pooper Jeeps: A creative game made possible with Bolt.new

· 2 min read · Pascal Mariany

I recently developed a retro-inspired game called Party Pooper Jeeps using Bolt.new. It is a split-screen multiplayer game in which players have to collect presents and capture the Christmas tree from the enemy base. The idea grew out of my love for classic DOS games, especially FirePower, which also appeared on platforms such as the Commodore 64. With the graphical differences you would expect from that era, of course.

FirePower in action, a game from the old days!

The game made with Bolt.new: Party Pooper Jeeps

And below is a short video of the game I made with AI, Party Pooper Jeeps:

The development process

The project started with a creative idea: how cool would it be to make a retro tank game with modern tools? Bolt.new served as the starting point, a tool that lets you generate game concepts quickly. Using various prompts, I generated the basis of the game, including core mechanics such as:

  • Fuel management
  • Speed and score
  • Collecting presents
  • A Christmas tree as the ultimate game objective

In total I spent six hours on it.

Prompting and knowledge of code

Although bolt.new can deliver powerful results, it helps to have some knowledge of user interaction and software design & development. During development a few bugs came up, such as:

  • Duplicate stats for the red player in split screen.
  • Audio that does not always play correctly.

These bugs show that basic knowledge of Phaser.js and TypeScript is essential to solve them while prompting.

The prompts summarised

Here is an overview of the prompts I used in Bolt.new:

  1. Initial Setup:
    • Started with a request for a beautiful, production-worthy design
    • Specified using JSX syntax with Tailwind CSS
    • Required using Lucide React for icons
    • Set guidelines for using Unsplash stock photos
  2. Audio Enhancement:
    • Added pickup sound when collecting the Christmas tree
    • This enhanced the game’s feedback and user experience
  3. Camera Improvements:
    • Added a 3-second camera pause on victory
    • This created a more dramatic moment when winning the game
  4. Victory Sequence:
    • Adjusted the timing of the score scene loading
    • Ensured the victory celebration was visible for 3 seconds before transitioning
  5. Bug Fix:
    • Addressed an issue with black canvas appearing after name entry
    • Improved the transition between scenes
  6. Deployment:

Play the Game!

Party Pooper Jeeps can now be played online! Try the game via this link: https://partypooperjeeps.eu/

Open source: Contribute!

I have also created a GitHub repo where you can contribute yourself or fork the project. Help fix bugs or add new features! View the GitHub repo here. Analysing and improving the code can be a very educational process.

Let's improve this retro game together. Have fun playing!
