Programmatic assessment card game

In the fast-changing world of education, gamification has proven to be a powerful way to increase pupils' engagement and motivation. By adding game elements to the learning process, educational games can create a dynamic and interactive learning environment that is not only fun but also effective. For teachers this offers the opportunity to convey complex concepts in an accessible way, while students benefit from increased motivation and a deeper learning experience.

"Turn learning into an adventure: discover the power of educational games and bring fun and effectiveness together in the classroom!"

The programmatic assessment card game

An excellent example of how gamification can be integrated into education is our latest offering: the Programmatic Assessment Card Game. This game is specifically designed to support teachers and students in understanding and applying the principles of programmatic assessment. Through interactive cards and playful working methods, learning becomes not only more effective but also a lot more fun. At the Vernieuwenderwijs Congress we successfully tested our Programmatic Assessment Card Game with a large group of enthusiastic participants. The interactive session brought teachers together to discover, through play, how they can integrate programmatic assessment into their teaching practice. The positive feedback and lively discussions showed that the card game is not only instructive but also tremendously fun and inspiring. We look forward to building on this success with the launch of the physical card game and the web app in autumn 2024!

Knowledge clip: Best practices for implementing programmatic assessment

  • Learning outcomes as the backbone: the learning outcomes form the core of the assessment programme. This ensures that all assessment is aimed at achieving the desired competences and skills.
  • Feedback and feedforward: every data point is aimed at giving feedback and feedforward, without direct pass/fail decisions. This helps students reflect and improve.
  • Proportional weight of decisions: the number of data points and the weight of decisions are proportionate to each other. This ensures a balanced and fair assessment of the student.
  • Ongoing dialogue: there is an ongoing dialogue about using feedback for self-direction, which contributes to the student's personal growth and development.
  • Assessor expertise: the weight of the decisions determines the expertise the assessors need, which contributes to the reliability of the assessment.

There's more! 🙂

Besides the card game, we also offer a route map for pupils and students. This route map, together with the accompanying stickers, helps make the learning process visual and shows the route through a school or programme at a glance. With programmatic assessment (development-oriented assessment), teachers and students can fill in and adjust the learning route. This can be done individually or as a team, leading to valuable discussions and insight into how the route affects the learning process and the evidence to be delivered. This interactive approach makes the learning process more dynamic and more goal-oriented.
